The Journey of a Deep Edit: From First Contact to Final Draft

Editing is more than polishing words—it’s about reshaping ideas so they shine with clarity and impact. At Majesco.co.za, a deep edit is a collaborative journey between editor and client, designed to refine voice, structure, and meaning while honouring the author’s vision. Here’s how the process unfolds:

Step 1: Reaching Out & Setting Goals

Every deep edit begins with communication. The client shares the goals of their future e-book or manuscript: what they want it to achieve, the audience they hope to reach, and the tone they envision. This initial conversation sets the foundation for everything that follows.

Step 2: Listening, Asking, and Sorting

Once the manuscript is in hand, I begin by reading closely and asking questions. What sections need restructuring? Where does the voice need refining? Which passages require factual corrections or tonal adjustments? At this stage, I start sorting in my mind how best to rewrite or redo sections, always keeping the client’s goals front and centre.

Step 3: Collaborative Editing in Google Docs

We work directly in Google Docs, which allows me to leave comments, ask questions at the exact portions that need attention, and make suggestions in real time. This interactive approach ensures the client is part of the process, not just a recipient of changes.

Step 4: The First Rewrite

With feedback and notes in place, I deliver the first rewrite. This version incorporates structural adjustments, tonal refinements, and substantive changes where needed. It’s the first major step toward transforming the manuscript into its strongest form.

Step 5: More Communication, More Refinement

Editing is iterative. After the first rewrite, we return to dialogue, discussing what works, what needs further adjustment, and where the manuscript can be sharpened. Together, we refine until the draft feels aligned with the client’s vision.

Step 6: Final Draft & Beyond

The process culminates in a final draft that reflects both professional polish and the client’s authentic voice. If further drafts are desired beyond this point, we renegotiate terms of payment and continue the process until the client is fully satisfied.

Why This Matters

A deep edit is not just about correcting grammar or smoothing sentences—it’s about partnership. It’s about listening deeply, asking the right questions, and reshaping words so that the client’s ideas resonate with clarity and conviction. At Majesco.co.za, every edit is a step toward amplifying your legacy.
