Sneaky Words

Some carry two opposite meanings depending on context. They’re called contronyms, and they show up in business conversations every day.

Three that might make you do a double-take:

Sanction: The board sanctioned the new policy (approved it). The vendor faced sanctions for the breach (penalties). The same word with opposite outcomes.

Oversight: She had oversight of the entire merger (supervision). The missing clause was a costly oversight (a mistake nobody caught). These are two very different performance reviews!

Dust : The team dusted off the old strategy (removed what was covering it). The pastry chef dusted the plate with cocoa (added it deliberately). One word describing the same action with an opposite intent.

Why does this matter professionally?

Because clarity isn’t just about choosing the right words. It’s about knowing when the right word can mean the wrong thing to your reader.

The most expensive miscommunications aren’t caused by complex language. They’re caused by words everyone thinks they understand.

Read everything twice. Not for errors. For interpretation.
